A huge fire has broken out in an oil refinery in south-east London

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters rushed to the scene, rescuing two men from the roof of the oil storage refinery after a fire broke out.

David Letchford was at the site at the time:

“I was working on the site when my colleague called me over and asked if I had seen all the smoke,” he said.

“I was watching and then suddenly the flames shot up and thick black smoke was blowing towards us. It absolutely stunk as well.

“We could see a Tesco factory next to the refinery had been evacuated but we kept working even though you could see people watching it.

“Everyone was nervous because of what type of building it is but the firefighters were quick to get it under control.”

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
