A bunch of criminals who stabbed a vulnerable 70-year-old Walthamstow shopkeeper during a robbery have been sent to prison.
21-year-old David Smith was given over nine years, and two unnamed 14-year-olds who joined him received youth rehab orders.
The incident, which took place on 17th April on Carr Road, saw the shopkeeper try to defend himself as the men assaulted him.
He received a punctured lung and is sadly now suffering from psychological effects as a result of the incident.
His wife and two customers were present during the incident.
Police thanked the local community in Walthamstow for swinging behind the victim to support and help him get back on his feet.
Following the trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Detective Constable Elle Madden from Waltham Forest CID – who led the investigation – said: “This was a horrific attack on a hard-working pensioner who was simply trying to run his shop.
“The offenders used an extreme level of violence against an elderly man who was trying to defend himself, his wife, his customers and his business.
“The attack could have resulted in tragic consequences and it is only through good fortune that the victim is now physically recovering. The victim and his family continue to deal with the consequences of this attack.
“I’d like to thank the victim and his family for their courage in helping us with this investigation and also to the local community for their support, which I know has been greatly appreciated by the victim. We hope this sentence will give them some peace and closure.”
