By-election date set for Richmond after Goldsmith resigns – but he’s running again

Former mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith will face a challenge to keep his place in Parliament after he resigned his Richmond Park seat over plans for expansion at Heathrow Airport.

Goldsmith, who won 43% of the vote in the mayoral election against Sadiq Khan earlier this year, will find out his fate on December 1st.

The seat was previously held by the Lib Dems since its creation in 1997.

The Conservatives will not put up a candidate of their own against Goldsmith, who has represented the seat since 2010.

Reaction from voters was mixed. Will Simpson wrote on Twitter: “Can’t say I agree with Zac Goldsmith on Heathrow third runway but I think it was a good idea to force a by-election.”
