Former police officer jailed for child sex offences against young girls

A former Met policeman has been jailed for eight years after admitting a series of sex assaults against girls aged under 13 and 14.

James Belam, 73 and of Chingford, served as a PC in Waltham Forest before retiring.

The offences took place over a period of over 30 years, beginning in the 1980s. None are believed to have taken place while he was on duty.

One victim came forward, and following his arrest other victims disclosed abuse too.

“This conviction shows that no matter when offences like this take place they will be investigated thoroughly and those responsible will be brought to justice,” said Detective Inspector Stuart Cheek.

“It is clear from his pattern of offending that Belam thought he could get away with the offences that spanned a period of three decades. He continued to sexually abuse young girls until his arrest.

“Thanks to the bravery of the victims coming forward, he now faces a lengthy jail term and will have to face up to his horrendous crimes,” DI Cheek added.
