Thailand’s capital Bangkok has defeated London to become the world’s most popular travel destination this year, according to banking giant Mastercard.
Despite suffering bomb blasts in the south of the country, Thailand still appears to be a hugely popular destination as it beat off 131 other cities to gain the title in Mastercard’s annual Index of Global Destination Cities.
“It isn’t a flash in the pan. Bangkok is in a strong position to be the top destination city for a long time,” Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, chief economist at the firm, told Reuters.
“There’s the value for money, especially for visitors coming from high-income countries.”
The country will see a record 33 million visitors this year. Bangkok itself will see 21.47 million internationals coming inside its walls.
London came top in 2015, but this year was pipped to the post as it received only 19.88 million visitors.
