Two machetes were found in a car in Hoxton on Monday evening

Police in Hackney found four lethal knives in a car while it was driving through a square in Shoreditch on Monday.

Officers stopped a vehicle in Hoxton Square at around 11.15pm after receiving information that the occupants were armed.

Two machetes, a kitchen knife and a lock knife were found when the vehicle was searched, and two men were arrested.

The men have been kept in custody in North London.

“The swift work of Hackney officers have removed four potentially lethal weapons from circulation. Knives have no place on our streets and those who choose to carry them will be arrested,” said Inspector James Hawkins from Hackney Police.

The incident occurred just after the end of the latest phase of Operation Sceptre, the Met’s large-scale crackdown on knife crime.
